Instructor Spotlight: Susan Fuller
This month, we profile longtime LPIE art instructor Susan Fuller.
What do you do for LPIE and how long have you been doing it?
I teach 2nd & 3rd grade art and have been with LPIE for 25 years.
Tell us about your background and experience in this area.
I am an exhibiting artist and published poet. My most recent works are wood/mixed media sculptures. My education includes a MA in studio arts and graduate work in child development and a teaching credential. I love sharing art making with children and making art. Being a mother has also been most valuable in working with young artists.
What is your favorite thing about working with the age group you teach?
My three favorite things are: their wonderful enthusiastic energy for art making, their openness to ideas, and their stunning originality.
What is the most surprising thing you’ve found about teaching this age group?
I'm always amazed at their uncanny ability to understand, and interpret art that I bring to share with them. I learn so much from the children. They get the power of art!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy gardening, and classical music, especially music of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, in which our son and daughter-in-law play. Also, I love visiting museums of art. It's inspiring to see permanent collections and cutting edge exhibitions.
