Meet Loretta McNulty - Stanley Music LPIE

Loretta McNulty earned her Bachelors of Music Education and Masters of Music from the Indiana University School of Music. This is her twenty-third year at Stanley. In 2006 she was honored with the CMEA Richard L. Levin Orchestra Educator Award, and in 2013 she was the inaugural recipient of the Bay Section of CMEA's Outstanding Orchestra Educator Award. She has served string education for Bay Section and on national committees of the American String Teachers Association. Loretta is the Immediate Past President of the California unit of ASTA.

We recently asked Loretta these questions:

Q. What is your role in the Stanley Music Department?

I teach the Strings Intermezzo! and Orchestra classes.

Q. What is the best thing about teaching music at Stanley?

The best thing about teaching music is sharing a sophisticated art form with a new generation and the joy of helping them learn how to express the inexpressible.

Q. What do you think are some of the most valuable things that students learn in music?

In addition to the above, students learn a wide variety of skills, starting with the technique of playing an instrument--an avenue to life-long satisfaction. Making music requires the synthesis of motor, reading, number, and social skills to create something beautiful. Students of music develop creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication--all important life skills.

Q. What do you think are some of the most valuable things that students learn in music?

Most students connect with the Music program by continuing their study from their previous school. Beginners are always welcome, too. Just contact the teachers and we'll help you get started.

Q. What do you like to do with your free time?

I enjoy reading, sewing and needlework, the outdoors.

Q. How does LPIE help the Stanley music department?

LPIE provides a great deal of support for the Music Department. We especially appreciate the funds that make it possible for our students to work with many of the outstanding professional musicians in the Lafayette area. Coaches provided by LPIE are the shining stars of our annual Chamber Music unit. Stanley students also have the opportunity to hear professional performances in their classroom, thanks to LPIE. Many thanks!

Q. Do you have anything to add?

One of the Stanley Music Department's greatest strengths is the support of parents who understand the place of music in a complete education. Sincere thanks to all.
