Read-a-thon FAQ

What is the Read-a-thon?
Now in its 3rd year, the Read-a-thon is a fun two-week event that encourages the love of reading and directly involves all students in the district in fundraising for our schools. Students log the amount of time they read and collect donations from friends and extended family to raise money for their schools. Donations are made to LPIE (Lafayette Partners in Education), which is the fundraising organization for the Lafayette School District and Acalanes High School.
How does it work?
Students must register at http://pledgestar.com/lafayette94549 to participate. The paper reading log and pledge forms are provided for ease of recording, but ALL reading and pledges must be logged online to be eligible for prizes! Students record their reading daily from November 1-15th. Before and during the two-week event, students are encouraged to ask friends, neighbors, and extended family to make donations for their reading efforts. All reading and pledges must be logged in the student’s online Pledgestar page by November 17th, 2022.
Are there prizes for participating?
Yes! The class with the highest participation wins a party. The top reader in each grade wins a prize and students who read 20 minutes or more per day or 40 minutes total during the LPIE Read-a-thon and turn in their packet on time with at least one donation will be entered for a chance to win fun raffle prizes. Remember, to be considered a participant and to be eligible for any prizes, students must log all reading and at least one pledge online by November 17th. All information will be verified. Students must truthfully record time read in the reading log. Students will not be eligible to win prizes if found to be dishonest.
How do I collect donations?
Sponsors can pledge either a flat amount or donate by the number of minutes read. Online donations, made via your student’s personalized fundraising page, are preferred (particularly by electronic check or ACH to reduce fees that are charged to LPIE). Checks can be mailed to LPIE, PO Box 923, Lafayette, CA 94549.
Log ALL donations made on behalf of your student on your Donation Form. To set up a personalized online fundraising page for your student, visit: http://pledgestar.com/lafayette94549
Is a Read-a-thon donation different than my annual LPIE donation?
Yes. While we welcome all donations, LPIE encourages parents and students to use the Read-a-thon as a way to get grandparents, neighbors, and extended family to make donations for the students’ reading efforts. Many friends and family find this the perfect way to encourage your child’s academic success and also show they care by supporting your child’s school. Parents and guardians should still make their suggested donation of $1850 per child (or what is meaningful) during the school year ending June 30th, 2023.
Can my donors have their gifts matched?
Yes! Many companies have a matching gift program that can increase and often double your donation to LPIE. It’s an easy way to increase your donation! For more information about corporate matching, and to see if your employer matches donations, click here or email office@lpie.org.
How much does the Read-a-thon raise for our schools?
Last year, students read over 500,000 minutes to raise $80,000+ to support their schools. Those funds are helping to support literacy and classroom libraries, science, music, art, AP and elective classes, counselors, and more.
